Macy’s Herald Square Awarded Best Holiday Windows in New York

design:retail magazine named Macy’s Herald Square as the Platinum Award winner in the annual Winning Windows Manhattan holiday retail window competition. The second-place Gold Award went to Bergdorf Goodman, and the third-place Silver Award went to Ralph Lauren Women’s Flagship.
For the 18th consecutive year, the design:retail Winning Windows awards honor the top three Manhattan retail stores for their excellence in holiday window design. design:retail Winning Windows judges walked New York City, touring the storefronts and delighting in the creative, festive and impeccably executed designs that window teams across the city have spent the past year planning.
Judging was based on three criteria: originality and creativity, spirit of the season and technical aspects of execution. This year’s 2017 judges included Alison Embrey Medina, editor in chief, design:retail magazine; Jessie Dowd, executive editor, design:retail magazine; and Anne Kong, associate professor, program coordinator for visual presentation and exhibition design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
The first-place Macy’s Herald Square windows featured the theme, “The Perfect Gift Brings People Together.” Inspired by the magic of holiday traditions and the importance of being with those we love throughout the Christmas season, these heart-warming windows capture the energy and spirit of New York during the holidays. Adorable scenes depict everything from making snow angels and ice skating to Santa’s sleigh flying through the New York City skyline and even a doll-house-like Macy’s Herald Square replica that opens to reveal little animals in the store inside. The windows create a little holiday magic that appeals to onlookers of all ages.
The second-place Bergdorf Goodman windows (including both the men’s and women’s stores) are a love letter to seven of New York City’s cultural institutions: American Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Museum of the Moving Image, The New York Botanical Garden, New York Philharmonic, New York Historical Society and UrbanGlass. Enchanting visitors with a multilayered experience that brings each institution to life, the windows offer unique and fantastical interpretations that delight and enchant, including a psychedelic take on a botanist’s library and bejeweled dinosaur fossils.
Ralph Lauren’s women’s flagship windows showcased white, wintry scenes in the woodlands, complete with chic teddy bear-headed mannequins. Elegant styling and extreme attention to detail lend sophistication to these impeccably composed displays.
The Winning Windows honorees were presented their awards at the PAVE Gala, held Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York.
